Job summary

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley (BGCSV) is seeking a part-time youth worker for our San Jose site. Join a dynamic after-school program to mentor youth, support social and academic growth, and provide engaging activities in a safe environment.

You will collaborate with staff to create inclusive programming, manage groups, and ensure youth well-being while building strong relationships with families and schools.

Qualifications

• Experience working with students in educational or recreational settings preferred.
• Background in after-school programs, sports coaching, theater, or special education desirable.
• Knowledge of childhood development and classroom management.
• Ability to educate and inspire youth through activities while fostering a positive learning environment.
• First Aid certification preferred; willingness to obtain if not held.

Responsibilities

• Supervision & Safety: ensure a safe and nurturing environment for youth participants.
• Facilitate activities promoting social, emotional, and physical development for groups of 20.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to members to navigate challenges and goals.
• Implement educational programs aligned with best practices in childhood development.
• Supervise and manage groups in various settings, ensuring safety and support.
• Collaborate with parents, teachers, and community organizations to enhance development.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

• Supervision & Safety: Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for youth participants
• Facilitate engaging activities that promote social, emotional, and physical development for a group of 20 members
• Provide mentorship and guidance to members, helping them navigate challenges and achieve their goals
• Implement educational programs that align with best practices in childhood development
• Supervise and manage groups of children in various settings, ensuring a safe and supportive environment
• Collaborate with parents, teachers, and community organizations to enhance the overall development of youth
• Utilize skills in sports coaching, theater, or other extracurricular activities to enrich the program offerings
• Maintain accurate records of members' progress and participation in activities
• Respond to emergencies with appropriate first aid measures when necessary

Classroom Management and Teaching

• Establish classroom rules and behavior
• Provide children with basic needs and ensure supervision
• Adapt teaching methods to children's interests and learning styles
• Manage classroom activities, lessons, play, breaks, and meals
• Track children's progress and communicate effectively with parents and teachers
• Maintain a clean and organized classroom

Relationships

• Mentoring: Serve as a positive role model and mentor to young participants, fostering their self-esteem and personal development
• Maintaining a Positive Environment: Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and respected
• Team Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues to ensure program goals are met and share best practices

Qualifications & Experience:

• Experience working with students in educational or recreational settings is preferred
• Background in after-school programs, sports coaching, theater, or special education is highly desirable
• Knowledge of childhood development principles and effective classroom management techniques
• Ability to educate and inspire youth through various activities while fostering a positive learning environment
• Certification in First Aid is preferred; willingness to obtain certification if not currently held
• Effective communication skills and the ability to build rapport with children and their families
• A commitment to promoting inclusivity and understanding diverse backgrounds among youth
• Department of Justice and FBI Background check clearance
• 18 yrs. of age
• NCLB (No Child Left Behind) certification required/ 48 Transferable Units
• Multi-conversational language skills are a plus (Spanish, Vietnamese)
• Experience or coursework in Childhood Development, or related fields, will be given preference
