Job summary

Vassar College seeks a part-time Security Officer to join Campus Safety on a weekend/overnight schedule. Officers patrol the campus, respond to calls, document incidents, and support parking and traffic management while maintaining safety and professionalism.

The role requires strong communication, the ability to de-escalate, a NYS driver license, and a valid NYS Security Guard credential; overtime and varied shifts are required.

Qualifications

• Must hold NYS Driver License for at least 2 years.
• Valid NYS Security Guard license or an 8-hour pre‑assignment training certificate; license within 30 days.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Ability to de-escalate charged situations.
• Able to stand and walk for long periods and work outdoors in all weather.
• CPR/AED certification or attainable; Narcan certification or attainable.
• Some local travel for training may be required.
• Associates degree or higher preferred.

Responsibilities

• Attend shift briefings and training mandated by the college and department.
• Fill vacant shifts as needed.
• Respond to all calls for service promptly and without delay.
• Prepare reports and use campus software to track information.
• Assist with campus event security as needed.
• Respond to incidents including acts of violence, theft, disputes, misconduct and medical calls.
• Participate in the officer field training program as assigned.
• Read and respond to College emails promptly; train new hires after training.
