Job summary

Vassar College seeks a Sergeant/Supervisor for Campus Safety to direct the 11pm-7am shift, supervise officers, and ensure policy adherence. This role requires strong leadership, incident response, and cross-department collaboration on a campus-wide safety mission.

The position demands a NYS Driver License and a NYS Security Guard license or eligible training, with willingness to work overtime and weekends; evening and overnight shifts are routine.

Qualifications

• Possess a New York State Driver License for at least 2 years.
• Possess a valid NYS Security Guard license or an equivalent 8-hour pre-assignment certificate.
• Minimum 30 college credits or formal supervisory training.
• Knowledge of NYS Penal Law and related campus regulations.
• Strong service orientation and ability to work in a diverse community.
• Proficient computer skills to prepare reports and use department software.
• Effective English communication, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work overtime and in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Assigns Officers shift posts and patrols.
• Conducts shift briefings and assigns special details.
• Fills vacant shifts and manages time/leave in payroll systems.
• Coordinates responses with police, fire, EMS and campus services.
• Responds to emergency calls requiring supervisory action.
• Directs emergency notifications to the campus as appropriate.
• Monitors records management system for accuracy.
• Monitors performance and issues corrective actions.
• Trains officers in new procedures and equipment.
• Reviews policy updates and briefings with officers.
• Communicates with other supervisors and senior personnel.
• Reviews reports for accuracy and completeness.
• Notifies senior Campus Safety personnel and College officials as needed.
• Oversees field training on their shift and participates in events security.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.
