Job summary

Uncommon Schools seeks a part-time Middle School Music Teacher, Instrumental Band to support and eventually lead a middle school band program across several campuses. You will work with lead teachers, receive weekly coaching, and prepare to lead the SY27-28 program with student recruitment and inventory planning.

The role emphasizes direct literacy instruction, ensemble development, and collaboration with the Director of Music Programs and principals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in music education required; Master's degree preferred.
• Experience leading bands and strong command of instrumental pedagogy.
• Proficiency playing and teaching woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
• Ability to manage and direct large groups of students.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Two or more years of teaching in urban public or charter schools preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support in host school band programs alongside lead band teachers.
• Engage in weekly observation and coaching cycles with the Director of Music Programs.
• Deliver high-quality instrumental instruction aligned to program standards.
• Teach concert band pedagogy across woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
• Rehearse and conduct ensembles with 5+ instrument types.
• Plan music literacy lessons in rhythm, pitch notation, improvisation, and composition.
• Design assessments to measure student progress and refine curriculum.
• Collaborate on curriculum development and events.
• Prepare to lead a band program in SY27-28 and recruit students.
• Build classroom management aligned with Uncommon systems.
• Support school needs, including coverage and other duties as needed.
• Contribute to collaborative curriculum and school functions.
