Job description

New employees typically start at step 1 of the pay scale ($19.98-$26.72/hour).

Returning employees are eligible for hire above step 1 based on previous seasons worked, with a maximum appointment at Step 3.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Responsible for manual labor tasks within the Public Works Department, including work on roads, bridges, vegetation, signage, pavement markings, traffic control devices, ferries, fleet, drainage, nuisance control, working with adult-in-custody work crews, park maintenance, environmental sites, parks, landfill, and transfer sites.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under the supervision of a supervisor, crew leader, or lead worker who assigns tasks and observes performance. May work independently on routine tasks at the supervisor's discretion.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility. May assist in instructing peers.

DUTIES
  • Perform maintenance at county parks, including landscaping, horticultural, janitorial, and forestry tasks; maintain park amenities, facilities, grounds, and trails; remove graffiti, illegal dumping, and garbage.
  • Assist with construction and remodeling, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, concrete work, excavation, trail work, and habitat enhancement.
  • Maintain tools and equipment; keep yard and shop organized.
  • Assist with special events and volunteer work; utilize mobile devices for work orders and data collection; may perform cash handling.
  • Operate vehicles to travel to park locations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Six months of experience in traffic control, road maintenance, exterior manual labor, landscaping, forestry, janitorial, or related areas; or a combination of relevant work, education, and training as determined by Marion County.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record; county will review driving records.
  • Pre-employment drug screening may be required.
  • Physical examination including agility test may be required for finalists.
  • Training and certifications may be required based on work area, including work zone traffic control, hazardous materials response, forklift operation, and online trainings.
  • This is a union-represented, part-time temporary position eligible for overtime.
  • Typical summer schedule: weekdays, weekends, and holidays, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of basic tools, traffic safety, recycling, landscaping, and park maintenance. Skills in communication, reading, basic computer use, technical and safety training, and reporting. Ability to follow instructions, exercise judgment, perform heavy manual labor in various weather conditions, operate equipment, and maintain good relationships with coworkers and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Operate vehicles, stand, walk, climb, bend, reach, lift up to 50 lbs., push/pull, work in adverse weather, around chemicals, and around engine vibrations. Use keyboard, distinguish colors, see depth, hear, and speak clearly.
