Job summary

The Town of Wrightsville Beach seeks an experienced Parks Maintenance Crew Leader to guide a crew in maintaining parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, and beach access areas. You will lead daily assignments, ensure safety, and deliver high‑quality outdoor maintenance in a coastal community.

You will organize tasks under the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, oversee equipment use, apply herbicides, and coordinate projects while mentoring team members.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience in landscaping and turf management required.
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and equipment operation.
• Ability to communicate clearly and maintain positive relationships.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license and pesticide licenses required.
• Physically demanding role with extensive time outdoors.
• Licenses: NC pesticide license and NC Turf & Ornamentals pesticide license or willingness to obtain.
• Lift Training Certification required.

Working under the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, you’ll organize assignments, monitor progress, and help your crew complete work safely and on time. Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading assigned full‑time and temporary employees and overseeing community service workers.
• Maintaining turf, landscaping, trees, shrubs, and planting beds.
• Preparing and maintaining athletic fields.
• Maintaining and making minor repairs to playgrounds, recreation facilities, picnic areas, and related amenities.
• Operating trucks, tractors, loaders, mowers, chainsaws, and other maintenance equipment.
• Applying herbicide and pesticide treatments.
• Coordinating work orders and checking equipment and work areas for safety.
• Supporting beach access maintenance, sand fence repairs, holiday decorations, and natural disaster cleanup.

Requirements

We’re looking for someone who can recognize what needs attention, follow through, and set a strong example for the crew.

Required qualifications include:

• Education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
• Considerable related experience, supplemented by training in landscaping and turf management.
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices, equipment operation, and applicable safety standards.
• The ability to communicate clearly, work independently, and maintain positive relationships with coworkers and the public.
• A valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• A North Carolina pesticide license.
• A North Carolina Turf and Ornamentals pesticide license, or willingness to obtain it.
• Lift Training Certification.
• This is a physically demanding role involving heavy manual work, equipment operation, and substantial time outdoors.

Additional qualifications that stand out: playground safety inspection certification (CPSI), park and recreation professional certification (CPRP), leadership training, documented heavy equipment operating experience, and certifications in first aid/CPR/AED, defensive driving, flagging, or work zone safety.
