Job summary

Town of Wrightsville Beach is seeking an experienced Parks Maintenance Crew Leader to guide a crew in maintaining parks, athletic fields and beach access areas. You will organize assignments, monitor progress, ensure safety, and lead both full‑time and temporary staff outdoors in varied weather.

The role requires substantial maintenance experience, leadership ability, and NC pesticide licensing or willingness to obtain.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma or equivalent and substantial related experience.
• Experience leading a crew in parks maintenance, municipal grounds, or athletic field upkeep.
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices, equipment operation, and safety standards.
• A valid North Carolina driver’s license and pesticide licenses (NC Turf and Ornamentals) or willingness to obtain them.
• Lift Training Certification is required.
• Physically demanding role with extensive time outdoors.

Responsibilities

• Leading assigned full‑time and temporary employees and overseeing community service workers.
• Maintaining turf, landscaping, trees, shrubs, and planting beds.
• Preparing and maintaining athletic fields.
• Maintaining and making minor repairs to playgrounds, recreation facilities, picnic areas, and related amenities.
• Operating trucks, tractors, loaders, mowers, chainsaws, and other maintenance equipment.
• Applying herbicide and pesticide treatments.
• Coordinating work orders and checking equipment and work areas for safety.
• Supporting beach access maintenance, sand fence repairs, holiday decorations, and natural disaster cleanup.

Required qualifications include:

• Education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
• Considerable related experience, supplemented by training in landscaping and turf management.
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices, equipment operation, and applicable safety standards.
• The ability to communicate clearly, work independently, and maintain positive relationships with coworkers and the public.
• A valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• A North Carolina pesticide license.
• A North Carolina Turf and Ornamentals pesticide license, or willingness to obtain it.
• Lift Training Certification.
• This is a physically demanding role involving heavy manual work, equipment operation, and substantial time outdoors.

Additional qualifications that stand out: playground safety inspection certification (CPSI), park and recreation professional certification (CPRP), leadership training, documented heavy equipment operating experience, and certifications in first aid/CPR/AED, defensive driving, flagging, or work zone safety.
