Job description

This position is responsible for maintenance of all public parks, play grounds, beaches, and other public open space. In addition, this position may be responsible for grounds and repair projects of other City owned facilities as directed.

Pay Grade 14:$27.00 - $30.08 Hourly
Remote Tier 1:Zero (0) days remote/week

  • Carry out all aspects of mowing including but not limited to groomed mowing, specialized and roadside mowing, trimming, and conservation grass mowing.
  • Perform irrigation system adjustments, minor repairs, etc. as necessary.
  • Perform maintenance and installation of park amenities including but not limited to playgrounds, benches, trash receptacles, bike racks, fencing, monuments, flagpoles, etc.
  • Perform welding and metal fabrication work to include but not limited to, playground repair, mowing deck and other implement repair. cutting with oxy-acetylene torches, welding by MIG or with ARC.
  • Perform graffiti removal including but not limited to sandblasting, replacement of vandalized material, sanding, painting, chemical removal of damage, power washing, etc.
  • Perform landscape construction including but not limited to installation, maintenance and repair of all turf and landscaped areas.
  • Install, maintain, and repair surface water collections and basic storm water systems present in parks.
  • Carry out all aspects of beach maintenance including but not limited to beach combing, waste removal, wood removal, and beach erosion mitigation.
  • Carry out all turf management duties including seeding, fertilizing, rolling, aerating, and top dressing for all City park turf areas.
  • Perform playground work including but not limited to monthly inspections, installation, repair, removal, etc. Inspections performed in accordance with National Playground Safety Inspection standards.
  • Assist the City Arborist and Arborist Technicians with vegetation management to include but not limited to pruning, brush clearing, vista clearing for specific areas such as the bike path, roadside green space, landfills, garden sites, etc.
  • Install and maintain all parks athletic fields to prepare all appropriate turf surfaces and markings for athletic fields for scheduled athletic events, including softball, football, lacrosse, baseball, soccer, volleyball, etc.
  • Carry out maintenance on park roadways, parking lots, walkways, bike paths, trails to include but not limited to asphalt repair, concrete repair, drainage repair, fence installation and repair, grading, barrier installation and removal, ensuring compliance with ADA.
  • Collect and remove all trash from all park properties.
  • Operate equipment including but not limited to specialized implements, trucks, trailers, tractors, and loaders.
  • Operate trimmers, chainsaws, and other vegetation management equipment.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly service checks and basic maintenance tasks on all equipment used including tractors, implements and vehicles. Maintenance functions include routinely cleaning, fueling, and greasing equipment used. It also includes preventative maintenance including but not limited to the sharpening and replacing of blades as required of mowing, trimming, and saw blade equipment.
  • Assist Grounds and Cemetery Maintenance Manager to ensure equipment receives service and required maintenance according to specified maintenance schedules. Carry out routine trips to drop off and pickup equipment and vehicles in need of service.
  • Perform all aspects of parks sign management including installation and repair,.
  • Plow and remove snow from walkways, bike paths, parking areas and outdoor skating rinks located in parks or other properties managed by Parks and Recreation or properties for which Parks and Recreation has contracted with for snow removal as required.
  • Carry out all aspects of outdoor skating rinks (parks and other properties as directed) including but not limited to water system preparation, site preparation, layout, flooding, resurfacing, installation and removal of City owned commercial rink systems, and snow removal.
  • Perform tasks associated with special events occurring throughout the City including but not limited to crowd and traffic control, installation of temporary fencing, , Carry out special work detail requests from outside departments and other local City entities as directed.
  • Respond appropriately to public inquiries regarding parks infrastructure.
  • Complete written forms to document equipment maintenance. Act as “Ambassador” for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.
  • Assist in the provision of cost and material estimates on building construction projects, turf projects, roadway projects, etc.
  • Safely operate skill saws, generators, sawzalls, hammer drills, jackhammers, table saw, radial arm saw, chop saw, hole shooter, drills, transit, hammers, sledge, tape measure, scaffolding, ladders, etc.
  • May provide direction to contractors working on buildings, grounds, and other park and City infrastructure.
Non-Essential Functions:
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years of experience using commercial riding, lawn-mowing equipment required.
  • Two years (2) of experience in general landscape construction or park or grounds maintenance required.
  • Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid Class D Vermont Driver’s License required.
  • Background in turf management with experience in seedbed preparation preferred.
  • Background in landscape construction with knowledge of irrigation system installation and repair preferred.
  • Ability to act independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to maintain professional appearance while engaging in field work, by refraining from any use of profanity, inappropriate language, or inappropriate behavior required.
  • Ability to provide direction and/or work with volunteers and temporary employees.
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
  • Experience using a pick-up or one-ton truck with front snowplow and landscape trailer required
  • Operate all Parks equipment in accordance with Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate Agricultural Style tractors, back hoe, front-end loader, chain saws and other power tools and equipment.
  • Utilize personal safety equipment in accordance with all VOSHA and department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interact with the public in a respectful and professional manner at all times.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain Playground Safety Inspector Certification.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds as directed.
  • Ability to work evenings weekends and holidays.
