Job description

This position is responsible for assisting Park Maintenance Workers in the day-to-day care of our parks. This includes but is not limited to the care and maintenance of turf, beaches, paths, playgrounds, buildings, and athletic fields.

Union Affiliation: Non-Union
Pay Grade: $19.15 Hourly
Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week.

  • Assist in the maintenance of turf care to include: mowing, trimming, seeding, aerating.
  • Clean restrooms regularly, including sweeping/mopping, restocking supplies, and wiping down all surfaces including sinks, urinals, and toilets.
  • Assist in the layout, painting, and maintenance of all athletic fields.
  • Assist in removing graffiti and addressing vandalism in the parks.
  • Assist in the transport of landscape materials throughout the city.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of work completed.
  • Assist in the collection of refuse in the park system.
  • Assist in the maintenance of playgrounds.
  • Assist with the removal of encampments in accordance with Outreach and Removal Policies set forth by the City of Burlington.
  • Be a park advocate, providing excellent customer feedback, and notifying park supervisors of undesirable activity, damage, excessive littering, etc.
  • Maintain a high level of customer service in a public atmosphere.
  • Able to work efficiently on an independent basis.
  • Assist in special events.
  • Support volunteer services in the parks.
  • Attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Position may require the operation of City vehicles and/or personal vehicles in order to conduct City business.
  • Assist in other job tasks as necessary.
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • Ability to have and maintain a valid driver’s license. Operation of City vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct City business without providing proof of a valid driver’s license to Human Resources will not be permitted.
  • Six months experience working in a landscaping or turf maintenance operation preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate power equipment, including but not limited to agricultural tractors, loaders, commercial riding mowers, push mowers, string trimmers, and small hand tools.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform routine and basic maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to both public and staff.
  • Ability to work well with others and individually.
