Job summary

The City of Burlington NC is seeking a Grounds Maintenance worker to keep three lakes and marinas safe, clean, and attractive for residents. You will perform mowing, weed control, equipment operation, signage, and marina operations support to ensure a welcoming public space.

Candidates should have a High School Diploma, a valid NC driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months.

  • Operates equipment including mowers, tractors, weed eaters, leaf blowers, stump grinders, and city trucks.
  • Mops, sweeps, collects garbage, cleans facilities, and performs minor repairs at lake facilities.

What you will do:

An employee in this class performs routine, manual work in providing safe, clean, and attractive lakes and marinas for use by city residents. An employee in this position performs the most responsible level of maintenance work among crew members. Good judgment and maturity are required. Work includes general landscaping, cleaning building interiors, equipment maintenance, and occasionally assisting marina operators in office operations.

Grounds Maintenance:
  • Mows, weed eats, sprays herbicides, plants flower beds, cuts and prunes trees, fertilizes, seeds, blows and rakes leaves, and grinds stumps across three lakes.
  • Operates various equipment, including mowers, tractors, weed eaters, leaf blowers, stump grinders, and city trucks.
Building Maintenance:
  • Mops, sweeps, collects garbage, cleans windows, checks water and air filters, changes light bulbs, and conducts minor repair work at three lake facilities.
Equipment Care:
  • Maintains and cleans groundskeeping tools and equipment by checking fluid levels, adding fluids, changing oil, replacing mower blades, and restringing weed eaters.
Supplies and Signage:
  • Purchases necessary supplies, tools, and equipment, writes purchase orders, and maintains purchase records.
  • Crafts and paints signs for the lakes.
Customer Support:
  • Assists marina operators with tasks such as checking in boats, running the cash register, answering customer inquiries, and managing rental reservations.
General Duties:
  • Performs additional maintenance and related duties as required.
Groundskeeping Knowledge and Skills:
  • Possesses general knowledge of groundskeeping and maintenance work.
  • Proficient in operating maintenance equipment, including mowers, tractors, leaf blowers, weed eaters, and stump grinders.
  • Skilled in seeding, strawing, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, and raking.
Maintenance and Safety Awareness:
  • Capable of identifying and reporting maintenance needs of lakes and marinas to supervisors.
  • Adheres to established safety principles and practices and works safely at all times.
  • Prepared to act quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Communication and Teamwork:
  • Demonstrates tact and courtesy in public interactions.
  • Works effectively as part of a team, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and the public.
Adaptability and Learning:
  • Learns and adheres to standards, policies, and procedures related to boats and boating.
  • Accepts and carries out instructions provided by supervisors with diligence.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma and considerable work experience in maintenance work, preferably at a park or marina, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina Pesticide Applicator License, or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of employment.
  • Must be able to operate a boat or have experience in operating a boat.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Work in this class is described as moderately strenuous using a negligible amount of force occasionally to move objects and complete tasks.
  • Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
  • Employee is subject to hazards, including noise, mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dusts.
  • Working conditions include outside environmental conditions.
