Job summary

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a Crew Leader for the Parks, Recreation, and Tourism division. You will lead daily maintenance tasks, supervise staff, and coordinate with contractors to keep parks, trails, and facilities in top condition.

Responsibilities include safety inspections, event support, equipment operation, scheduling, and performance evaluations. Requires a high school diploma and a Class A CDL; some supervisory experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma, GED/HSE or equivalent.
• Minimum one year of related, full-time experience.
• CDL Class A license required at time of hire.
• Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

Responsibilities

• Leads daily work assignments, ensuring staff have tools and supplies to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
• Oversees grounds maintenance, landscaping, repairs, construction, and custodial work using tools and heavy equipment.
• May supervise inmate work crews through the Sheriff’s Department workforce program.
• Supports events with setup, transport, and post-event cleanup.
• Conducts safety inspections of parks and facilities, ensuring repairs are completed.
• Assigns duties, coordinates resources, trains staff, and ensures safety compliance.
• Maintains equipment and reports deficiencies to ensure safe operation.
• Assists with scheduling, hiring, evaluations, and staff development.
• Communicates with citizens, contractors, and agencies to provide customer service.
• Maintains work orders, inventories, and reports documenting activities.
• Operates mowers, tractors, chainsaws, backhoes, graders, and dump trucks.
• Assists with contractor inspections, budgeting, and purchasing.
• Performs administrative duties including timekeeping and data entry.
• Attends meetings and professional development activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
