Parents As Teachers (PAT)/ Parent Educator (PE)
POSITION SUMMARY

A certified parent educator implements the PAT model, emphasizing parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being in their work with families. Utilizing the PAT Foundational Curriculum in culturally sensitive ways, the parent educator partners, facilitates, and reflects with families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage in recruitment activities.
  • Complete an initial and annual family-centered assessment with each family.
  • Develop, monitor, and review goals with each family.
  • Plan, provide, and document personal visits focused on parent-child interaction, development centered parenting and family well‑being.
  • Use the Foundational Curriculum to share researched based information with families.
  • Screen for child’s developmental progress.
  • Provide group connections to give families an opportunity to build social connections with each other, engage in parent-child interaction activities, and increase their knowledge of ways to support children’s development.
  • Complete at least an initial and annual developmental screening, health review for each child.
  • Connect families to resources that help them reach their goals and address their needs.
  • Help parents and children transition to other services as needed, preschool or to kindergarten.
  • Maintain and submit in a timely way all required family and program documentation.
  • Organize and inventory supplies and materials, etc.
  • Participate in at least two hours of reflective supervision monthly and at least two hours of staff meetings monthly.
  • Obtain competency-based professional development and renew parent educator certification annually.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement.
  • Be available to serve families in non-traditional work hours if necessary.
  • Participate in Quality through Technology and Innovation in Pediatrics meetings and collaboratives.
  • Attend trainings/conferences/webinars as specified throughout the year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate oral and written communication skills. Bi‑lingual a plus.
  • Must possess basic computer skills including web browsing, e‑mail, internet and word processing.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Confidentiality is important as direct support staff have access to full health information with the clear understanding that access and reading is limited to need for treatment, reimbursement or operations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths.
  • The parent educator must complete Foundational Training and Model Implementation Training before delivering PAT services.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelors in early childhood education, social work, health, psychology or a related field.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths.
