Job summary

The Department of Education of the City of New York is seeking a Parent Coordinator for PS 163 The Alfred E. Smith School. You will work with the principal, staff, and families to engage parents, address concerns, and promote a welcoming school community.

You will convene meetings, partner with parent associations, and organize events to involve parents and community groups, including those with limited English proficiency. Flex hours may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 2 years in community work.
• Or an Associate’s degree and 4 years in community work.
• High school diploma with 6 years in community work.
• Familiarity with NYC public school system.
• Experience with convening workshops.
• Bilingual ability where needed.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Conflict resolution and mediation skills.

Responsibilities

• Increase parent involvement by working with school, parent and community organizations.
• Facilitate parent and school community concerns including policies and facilities.
• Conduct outreach to engage parents in children’s education.
• Convene regular parent meetings and events on key topics.
• Attend parent meetings with the principal.
• Coordinate with the parent association on by-laws and elections, per DOE rules.
• Serve as liaison to central and field-based parent support staff.
• Maintain contact with community organizations providing school services.
• Organize back-to-school events to boost parental involvement.
