Job summary

Delaware Department of Justice seeks a Legal Assistant (Paralegal) to support Deputy Attorneys General in the Criminal Division, Felony Trial Unit in Sussex County. Duties include intakes with police, organizing evidence, redacting records, sending discovery, and managing large case files for felony cases.

The role requires solid legal research, drafting, interviewing, and case-management skills, with frequent interaction with police, witnesses, and victims; the candidate must be detail-oriented

Qualifications

• Three years of DOJ experience in a similar capacity.
• Associate’s degree or certificate in Paralegal Studies from an ABA or Department approved program.
• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
• Two years’ experience in drafting legal documents such as briefs or memoranda of law.
• Two years’ experience in interviewing using structured or unstructured techniques.

Responsibilities

• Interviews involved parties to gather discovery material and evidence.
• Establishes and maintains case files with complete information from pre-hearing to sentencing.
• Reviews police, medical, and other reports; summarizes details for Deputy Attorneys General.
• Drafts subpoenas, motions, and legal pleadings and handles discovery.
