Job summary

Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is seeking a Paralegal to support attorneys and the Eviction Defense Center workgroup. You will interview clients, counsel on a range of legal issues, and draft pleadings such as unlawful detainer responses and discovery requests.

You will participate in in-person clinics, collaborate with a team of attorneys, staff, volunteers, and community organizers to defend tenants and preserve housing.

Qualifications

• Four‑year degree or Paralegal Certificate.
• One year relevant work experience preferred.
• Experience working with low-income individuals preferred.
• Experience interviewing clients preferred.
• Experience working in poverty law issues preferred.
• Some knowledge of landlord‑tenant law preferred.
• Self-motivated; takes initiative; quick learner.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Organized; able to handle high-volume caseload.
• Flexible in job duties; second language proficiency welcomed.

Responsibilities

• Work in conjunction with the staff attorneys.
• Interview and counsel clients on various legal issues.
• Draft pleadings such as unlawful detainer answers and discovery.
• Participate in live in-person clinics and other community outreach projects.
• Work effectively as part of a team including attorneys, support staff, students, volunteers and community organizers/organizations.
• Other duties as assigned.
