Job summary

Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is seeking an Attorney to manage limited-scope pre-eviction cases for low-income tenants and to guide or oversee paralegal work. The role emphasizes collaboration with housing advocates and community outreach on tenants’ rights.

The successful candidate will be a California-licensed attorney with strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and flexibility to work evenings and weekends when needed, including caseload-driven overtime.

Qualifications

• Active membership in the State Bar of California.
• Substantive knowledge of landlord-tenant and housing law strongly preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills with empathy under stress.
• Experience mentoring or reviewing legal work.
• Collaborative mindset to work with a team of attorneys, paralegals, and staff.
• Flexibility to work beyond 7.0 hours including evenings/weekends.
• Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage an active caseload of limited-scope, pre-eviction matters for low-income tenants, including eligibility screening, client interviews, research, counsel, negotiations, and coordination with government agencies.
• Support and oversee paralegal casework to ensure timely, high-quality legal assistance.
• Partner with LAFLA housing advocates to track housing trends affecting tenants and communities.
• Collaborate with the Client Intake Workgroup Managing Attorney to design and deliver community education on housing law and tenants’ rights.
• Take on other duties to support the workgroup’s mission.
