Job summary

Polk County seeks a paralegal under attorney direction to provide direct legal support in criminal justice matters. You will perform delegated substantive tasks, prepare documents, and assist in trials and hearings. The role requires strong knowledge of court procedures, research abilities, and meticulous case management.

A paralegal training program and relevant experience are required, with background checks and drug screening. Weekend/holiday shifts at Polk County Jail may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required and completion of a 2-year paralegal program.
• At least one year of experience in paralegal, criminal justice, or related field.
• Ability to learn and adapt to Polk County Jail environment; background check and drug screen required.
• Knowledge of court procedures and legal terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

• Receive and review referrals; initiate necessary legal documents for timely filing of cases.
• Assist attorneys in hearings by maintaining files, researching, and collecting evidence.
• Prepare exhibits, notes, depositions, and trial papers; maintain case calendars and scheduling.
• Attend depositions, hearings, arraignments, and trials; draft pleadings and court orders.
• Develop and maintain case information; coordinate with justice system personnel and clients.
