Job summary

Allen County is seeking a Paralegal for the Criminal Division to assist in daily processing of criminal cases from federal, state, and local agencies. Responsibilities include calendar management, subpoenas, discovery, and court filings.

The role supports deputies and prosecutors, requiring strong communication and confidentiality, with standard office duties and potential overtime. Prior experience in criminal justice is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED with an Associates’ Degree in Criminal Justice or law related field preferred.
  • One year of experience in the criminal justice system, law enforcement, court operations, corrections, or similar experience.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements through courts and other related county departments to assist the public, attorneys, law enforcement officers, and other agencies.
  • Knowledge of standard law enforcement operating policies and procedures and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with professionals, non-professionals, co-workers, victims, victim advocates, law enforcement personnel, attorneys, witnesses, defendants and government agencies.
  • Ability to utilize multi-tasking skills while ensuring quality of work and deadlines are met.
  • Ability to perform a variety of office related support activities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related software.

Responsibilities

  • Process criminal cases for trial preparation including legal documents, data entry, and correspondence.
  • Complete a daily court calendar for Allen County Superior and Circuit Courts, obtain jury panels, and issue discovery to defense attorneys.
  • Prepare subpoenas and cancel subpoenas when trials are completed, dismissed, or continued.
  • Enter revocation petitions and prepare files for court.
  • Request criminal history documentation including national, state, local histories, booking photos, arrest records, juvenile histories, and Bureau of Motor Vehicle records.
  • Schedule appointments for defense attorneys, depositions, and pretrial conferences.
  • Assist victims with restitution information, no contact orders, subpoenas, and court dates.
  • Communicate with law enforcement at federal, state, and local levels, the public, victims and witnesses.
