Introduction
The Governor's Office of Crime Prevention and Policy serves as a coordinating office advising the Governor on criminal justice strategies. The office plans, promotes, and funds efforts with government entities, private organizations, and the community to enhance public policy, improve public safety, reduce crime and juvenile delinquency, and serve victims.

Main Purpose of Job
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Board (CICB) is a remedial body designed to assist Maryland victims of crime. CICB reviews a high volume of reimbursement claims from individuals for expenses incurred due to victimization.
The Paralegal will support CICB in managing claims, conducting research, drafting opinions, and providing administrative support. The ideal candidate will understand Maryland law, possess excellent organizational skills, and be committed to helping crime victims.
Case Review
• Review claims daily for sufficiency and accuracy as provided by victim compensation analysts.
• Draft claims decision language for the Deputy Director’s review.
• Collaborate with the Deputy Director to review Board decisions.
Legal Research, Analysis, Policy, and Compliance
• Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and policies.
• Assist victim compensation analysts with legal interpretation and application.
• Conduct legal research using LexisNexis and support the Deputy Director on legal matters related to consultations, claims, Board submissions, and appeals.
• Participate in reviewing and revising CICB regulations and policies.
Administrative Support
• Coordinate Board meetings, prepare agendas, and record minutes.
• Prepare and organize materials for meetings and hearings.
• Maintain accurate records of activities and correspondence.
• Prepare files for hearings and appeals.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the Deputy Director.
• Note: This is a special appointment position serving at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: High school diploma or equivalency.
• Experience: Six years of administrative or professional work.
Notes
• Substitutions allowed: 30 college credits per year of experience up to four years; Bachelor's degree plus two years' experience; Master's degree; U.S. Armed Forces service experience involving staff work.
Preferred Qualifications
• At least one year of experience as an administrator, legal assistant, or paralegal.
• Completion of a paralegal or legal assistant program or related coursework.
Selection Process
Candidates must provide complete information to demonstrate qualification. Successful candidates will be ranked and placed on an eligibility list for at least one year.
