Job summary

Kelso School District is seeking a Para Educator-Special Education-Resource at Lexington Elementary School to support a student-centered program. The role includes assisting the special education teacher with IEP records, progress reports, and service documentation, while supervising students and maintaining a professional, safe environment.

Responsibilities include following district rules, safeguarding data, and participating in meetings, trainings, and classroom team activities.

Qualifications

• Be at least eighteen years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must meet PESB-approved qualification options.
• Associate degree or higher or 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits.
• Completed apprenticeship as a paraeducator (WSATC-registered).
• Training on the Fundamental Course of Study within funded timelines.

Responsibilities

• Assist the special education teacher with record keeping and IEP-related documentation.
• Submit IEPs and progress reports timely and document services
• Assist with daily hygiene activities for students with disabilities as needed
• Supervise students in cafeteria, classroom, grounds and community areas
• Protect students and school property and uphold rules and policies
• Maintain regular attendance and participate in meetings and trainings

Location: Lexington Elementary School

Para Educator-Special Education-Resource

Position Details: 6.5 hrs/day, 8:30am to 3:30pm; 188 days/year.

Potential reduction hours due to Wednesday early release, early dismissals for parent conferences, holidays, and last day of school; reduction hours subject to change. Job assignment and/or building assignment are subject to change based on program needs determined by the district.

Pay Range: PSE 1 Salary Schedule

Essential Functions

• To assist the special education teacher in maintaining necessary records
• Undertake with the timely submission of IEPs and progress reports and documentation of provision of services related to an IEP
• Assist in daily hygiene activities, including personal care (toileting, grooming etc.) for students with disabilities, if needed
• Supervise students in the cafeteria, classroom, on school grounds and in the community as needed
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
• Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies
• Must have regular and consistent attendance

Qualifications

• Demonstrated awareness and appreciation of diversity among individual students and the ability to set appropriate expectations for individual students
• Must possess valid first aid and CPR cards (or obtain upon employment) and be willing to keep cards current
• Must possess valid CPI training (or obtain upon employment)
• Previous experience or training in working with students with disabilities preferred
• Must have physical ability to lift, position and/or transfer students (with assistance as may be required) up to 21 years of age
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with teachers, parents and students with disabilities
• Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and be able to project a positive, friendly and caring attitude toward others
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to participate in activities and responsibilities as assigned by the classroom teacher
• Demonstrated ability to work independently under the direction of the classroom teacher, while accepting direction and constructive criticism
• Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters appropriately and ethically
• Demonstrated ability to work with student records and data collection
• Ability to effectively supervise students in all school areas
• Willingness to participate in classroom team meetings, in-service offerings and local workshops
• Demonstrated ability to use proper grammar and spelling in written and oral communication and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Ability to use multiple communication systems such as email, computers, document readers, and smart boards
• Neat, clean personal appearance and personal traits that make him/her a good role model for students; work apparel should be appropriate for a professional and safe work environment

Education

• Be at least eighteen years of age, hold a high school diploma and/or equivalent, AND must meet at least one of the following options:
• Have received a passing score on one of the assessments approved by PESB (Professional Educator Standards Board)
• Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
• Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university
• Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council (WSATC)**
• Must complete training on the Fundamental Course of Study within the timelines described in RCW 28A.413.070 in years that the program is funded by the legislature
