Job summary

SML is seeking a Maintenance Painter in Kodiak, AK, to prep, paint, and complete projects in a timely manner. You will manage supplies, work with a team of painters, and ensure safety protocols are followed on site.

A valid Alaska Hazardous Paint Handler certification and English communication skills are required. The position involves preparing surfaces, applying various coatings, operating airless sprayers, and coordinating with supervisors on material availability.

Qualifications

  • High school education or G.E.D equivalent.
  • Valid State of Alaska Hazardous Paint Handler Certification.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly (oral and written) in the English language.
  • Knowledge of surface peculiarities and types of paint required for different applications.
  • Must have experience with airless paint sprayer.
  • Ability to pass a background and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble scaffolding as required.
  • Cover surfaces with masking tape, drop cloths and protective coverings.
  • Set up ventilation and safety equipment; wear PPE.
  • Prepare surfaces by washing, filling holes, and sanding.
  • Mix and match paints and finishes to specifications.
  • Apply coatings including oil-based enamel, epoxy, latex, varnishes, and road markings.
  • Paint using airless sprayers, rollers, and brushes.
  • Review production schedules and material deliveries.
  • Coordinate with supervisors on material status and locations.
  • Move/transport materials as needed within the facility.
  • Update inventory as required.
  • Follow health and safety guidelines; perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The work of the Maintenance Painter requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience. The Painter is responsible for prepping, painting, and completing work in a timely manner. Keeping an inventory of supplies like paint brushes, rollers, tarps, or ladders and working with a team of painters to oversee the completion of painting jobs.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assembling scaffolding as required.
  • Covering trim, floors, furniture, and other surfaces with masking tape, drop cloths and other protective coverings to keep them free of paint.
  • Setting up ventilators and other safety equipment to protect Painters from unhealthy fumes, wearing proper PPE.
  • Preparing surfaces to be painted by washing them, filling holes and cracks with putty and sanding them until they’re smooth.
  • Mixing and matching paint, stain, and other finishes to job specifications.
  • Apply a variety of coatings including but not limited to oil-based enamel, oil and acrylic epoxy, interior and exterior latex, oil and water bases stains, oil and water-based varnishes, and road marking paints.
  • Paint using air and airless sprayers, rollers, and brushes.
  • Review’s production schedules and work orders to verify delivery of material and priorities of parts orders.
  • Confers with department supervisors to determine materials overdue and to inform them of location, availability, and condition of materials.
  • May compare work ticket specifications with material at workstations to verify delivery.
  • May move or transport material from one department to another, using company vehicle.
  • May help update inventory using manual or computerized system.
  • Take and adhere to all health and safety precautions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES
REQUIREMENTS
  • High school education or G.E.D equivalent
  • Valid State of Alaska Hazardous Paint Handler Certification.

  • Must have experience with airless paint sprayer
  • Ability to pass a background and drug screening.
PREFERRED
  • Four (4) years related work experience.
  • Experience with sheetrock wall repair.
  • Past carpentry experience a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Job is performed in a variety of settings including occupied or vacant housing units and a variety of industrial spaces, and at times exposed to all types of weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
LIFTING & CARRYING

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking, or standing for prolonged periods of time; at times may lift and carry as much as 50 lbs.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS

As a condition of employment, will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base.
