Job summary

UT-Battelle in Oak Ridge, TN is seeking a Painter to perform a wide range of painting tasks under limited supervision across rooms, equipment, buildings, laboratories, pipes, and surfaces.

You will apply brushes, rollers, and sprays, prepare surfaces, and ensure safety while following lab policies. A HS diploma or GED and at least five years of painting experience in commercial or industrial settings are required.

  • Prepare surfaces by scraping, wet sanding, patching, pressure washing, sandblasting, cleaning, and degreasing.
  • Hang drywall and finish sheetrock; install decals and vinyl frosting on glass surfaces.
  • Promote safe operations by following the Safe Conduct of Research and company safety policies.

Overview

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Painter. In this position, you will perform, under limitedsupervision, a wide variety of painting jobs utilizing various application methods throughout the laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
  • Perform all types of painting, priming, and removal on the following surfaces: interior and exterior rooms,equipment, exterior of buildings, laboratories, pipes, handrails and stairwells, floors, steel, and other varioussurfaces.
  • Use numerous application methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying.
  • Apply epoxies, floor coatings, non-skid coatings, wall coverings, and caulking.
  • Stripe parking lots and road surfaces.
  • Fireproof wood and fire barriers.
  • Prepare surfaces by scraping, wet sanding, patching, pressure washing, sandblasting, cleaning, ordegreasing.
  • Hang drywall and finish sheetrock application.
  • Install decals and vinyl frosting on glass surfaces.
  • Perform specialty methods and applications such as special coatings, staining/finishing wood trim, texturingwalls and ceilings, and hanging and stripping wallpaper.
  • Choose the right paint or finish for the surface to be covered by analyzing the paint thickness, durability, easeof handling, method of application, and paint plan.
  • Calculate the amount of materials needed for a job based on surface measurement and/or work orders.
  • Provide superior customer service to internal and external customers Other tasks as assigned by management.

Basic Qualifications
  • HS diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of five years of painting experience in commercial or industrial setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of a formal training program and industrial experience.
  • Strong knowledge of various paint application methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation (scraping, wet sanding, patching, pressure washing, blasting, cleaning, ordegreasing).
  • Knowledge of how to paint different types of surfaces such as offices, equipment, doors, pipes, handrails,steel, and other surfaces, including striping.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques related in painting in specialized areas and work environments.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques related to the safe use, storage, and disposal of paint and cleaningproducts and chemicals, and safe cleanup techniques. Understand compatible and incompatible paints and substitutions.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to understand and comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team, other departments, etc.
Special Requirements
  • Physical Requirements: Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
