Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a material handling professional to support storage, transport, and inventory control of materials including hazardous items. Candidates must hold a Class B CDL with the ability to obtain an HME and comply with DOE/DOJ access requirements.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED required.
  • Class B CDL with ability to obtain Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HME).
  • Willingness to obtain Mobile Equipment Operator certification.

Responsibilities

  • Move freight and materials between storage/production areas using hands or equipment.
  • Inspect loads and verify item quantity and weight.
  • Transport materials using government vehicles as needed.
  • Sort and check in materials; attach barcodes for inventory.
  • Maintain property records and issue materials from stores.
  • Perform inventory and resolve discrepancies; reorder supplies.
  • Receive hazardous and radiological materials and ensure safe handling.
  • Follow safety procedures and contribute to safe research practices.
  • Support ORNL’s mission and uphold core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.

Job description

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Moving freight, stock, or other materials to and from storage or production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, or containers, by hand or using trucks and other equipment.
  • Inspecting load and identifying proper quantity of items and package weight.
  • Transporting materials using government vehicles.
  • Sorting materials before loading and unloading.
  • Checking in materials and attach identifying information such as barcodes for property management.
  • Maintaining property records.
  • Issuing materials from stores, bench stocks, and tool cribs while maintaining inventory of supplies.
  • Performing inventory of items and resolving any inventory conflicts.
  • Ordering and restocking supplies.
  • Receiving hazardous and radiological material.
  • Installing protective devices, such as bracing, padding, or strapping to prevent shifting or damage to items being transported.
  • Maintaining equipment storage areas to ensure that materials are protected.
  • Resolving customer inquiries and issues.
  • Abiding by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning.

Basic Qualifications:
  • HS diploma or GED.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the ability to obtain a Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HME).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HME).
  • Knowledge of proper procedures and documents for handling, usage, storage, transport, or disposal of materials.
  • Knowledge of work control requirements.
  • Knowledge of general safety and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Knowledge, skill, and compliance with Industrial Safety Requirements with portable ladders, 2-wheel hand trucks, cylinder dollies, conveyors, push/pull carts, power and manual pallet jacks, CDL delivery trucks with power tailgates, trucks, vans, forklifts.
  • Knowledge and skill in the storage and handling of hazardous and radiological materials, supplies, and disposal.
  • Knowledge and skill in computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Mobile Equipment Operator certification.
Special Requirements:
  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa Sponsorship:Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
