Job summary

Kirby-Smith Machinery, Inc. is seeking an intern for the DoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic program in the central United States.

The role provides hands-on diagnosis, repair, and maintenance training on heavy construction equipment, with supervised learning and real shop exposure. Interns gain civilian-recognized technical skills, learn Kirby-Smith shop operations and safety standards, and may transition to full-time employment after separation from military service.

Qualifications

• Active-duty DoD SkillBridge participant with 180 days or fewer before separation.
• Military mechanical/technical/maintenance background preferred.
• Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
• Ability to read technical manuals and follow repair procedures.
• Willingness to learn manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools and software.
• Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks in a shop environment.
• Strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and professional communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Performs diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and powertrains under supervision.
• Completes preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service on heavy equipment.
• Reads and interprets technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins.
• Uses diagnostic software and tools to identify equipment issues.
• Documents work performed, parts used, and labor hours in the shop management system.
• Maintains a clean, safe work area per safety standards.
• Communicates professionally with technicians, service managers, and customers.
