Job summary

Job description

Overview

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Packaging/Payload Engineer and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Responsibilities

Candidate will be responsible for performing detailed computational analysis in support of the SIMCO/NTP Packaging Group in the areas of payload analysis and packaging analysis. Perform engineering design and analysis of gas transport phenomena, evaluate new designs to meet TRU waste generator site packaging and payload needs. Assist in the areas of Type A payload containers, Type B Package components, Type B Package transport trailers and associated ancillary equipment to ensure that all applicable Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and/or Department of Transportation (DOT) and system design requirements have been met. Perform detailed analysis in support of the NRC licensing documents (SAR, TRAMPAC, etc.) for structural, thermal, shielding & payload initiatives.

Minimum Requirements
  • PhD in mechanical engineering or related discipline with a minimum of four (4) years of design/analysis or related experience is required, or
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline with a minimum of seven (7) years of design/analysis or related experience is required, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline with a minimum of nine (9) years of design/analysis or related experience is required.
  • Five (5) years experience working under a quality assurance program is required.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).
  • Non‑U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries—are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
Preferred Requirements
  • 3 years of project management experience is desired
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with modeling transport of radioactive materials considering variables such as criticality, thermal, and shielding.

Exempt grade level(s) 33‑36. Salary range: $105,312 to $201,044 per year—the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
