Job summary

TemperPack is seeking a Packaging Engineer II in Richmond, VA to advance packaging solutions for cold‑chain shipping, from density calculations to ISTA‑aligned testing. You will collaborate with the Packaging Engineering team, use SOLIDWORKS and Onshape, and maintain testing data and CAD diagrams for customers and sales materials.

The role requires a BS in Packaging or Mechanical Engineering and 3–5 years of box/corrugated design with 2–4 years in cold‑chain shipping, plus ISTA I/II

Qualifications

  • BS in Packaging or Mechanical Engineering.

  • ISTA CTP I and II certification within 6 months.
  • Project management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Document and assess existing pack‑out solutions; measure and weigh packing elements, calculate density, void space, surface area, and other key metrics.
  • Use math, software, and ingenuity to develop new pack‑out configurations that optimize shippers for performance, economics, or other customer specifications.
  • Maintain a database of solutions by diagnosing inbound samples and informing solution design.
  • Collaborate with other Packaging Engineers to design, conduct, and document thermal packaging tests in line with ISTA standards; assist in design, preparation, and maintenance of testing materials and equipment, analyze data, and prepare test reports for customers.
  • Utilize CAD software to create accurate packaging diagrams for testing, sales, and marketing documents.
  • Employ Excel and CAD programs such as SOLIDWORKS and Onshape.
  • Be organized, detail‑oriented, and maintain a “test mentality”; define objectives, use creative thinking, eliminate variables, and clearly explain outcomes to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a continuous learning mindset and willingness to learn new tasks as the business grows.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

  • 2‑4 years of cold‑chain shipping experience.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to reach, bend, kneel, and climb while performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold environments.
  • Ability to correctly wear PPE for the entire shift.
  • Ability to react and respond quickly to noises, smells, visual hazards, and alerts.
  • Must be active and on feet throughout the shift; some days primarily at desk, other days moving around lab, measuring materials, and setting up samples.
