Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter for Commercial P&C in Ohio. You will evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business, develop risk assessment models, and ensure compliance with regulations.

You will build relationships with agents and brokers, communicate underwriting strategies, and mentor staff as needed. Travel ~10% and P&C license is preferred but not required, with license within six months of employment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in Underwriting Commercial P&C lines.
• P&C Insurance License preferred, but not required; license within 6 months of hire.
• Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software quickly.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Job description

• Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business according to Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite
• Use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals
• Develop and implement risk assessment models for coverage, pricing, and terms decisions
• Evaluate complex policy renewals and modifications, identifying policy enhancement and risk mitigation opportunities
• Procure and analyze supplementary reports and screenings, including motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, and external inspections
• Document underwriting decisions and ensure compliance with state and federal insurance regulations
• Communicate underwriting strategies and decisions to internal teams, agents, and brokers
• Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions
• Monitor and evaluate underwriting practices and assist with strategic adjustments
• Build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers to attract and retain profitable business
• Develop and strengthen agent and broker relationships through phone conversations, written communication, in-person engagement, and travel
• May oversee and coach staff and participate in talent selection, development, and performance management decisions
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Business, Liberal Arts or a related discipline
• Generally, a minimum of 10 years of experience in Underwriting Commercial P&C lines
• P&C Insurance License preferred, but not required for hire; candidates must get their P&C license within their first 6 months of employment
• Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Strong ability to learn new software quickly and efficiently
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
