The ideal candidate has a High School Diploma or GED, at least one year in a similar role, strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to read engineering drawings, and the discipline to work with limited supervision in a safety‑conscious environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED required.
• 1 year minimum Austal trade assistant or 1 year machine shop experience.
• Knowledge of machining procedures and ship terminology.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and operate machinery safely.
• Ability to read simple instructions and write simple correspondence.
• Ability to interpret job specs and work on marine vessels.
• Ability to work with limited supervision.
• Ability to measure using the metric system.

Responsibilities

• Install equipment on board vessels in a safe and productive manner.
• Disassemble, repair and re-assemble shipboard equipment as directed by the supervisor.
• Mark and measure to close tolerances using Austal calibrated equipment.
• Safely rig equipment following all OSHA requirements.
• Inspect work and initiate corrective actions as needed.
• Contribute to quality procedures within the department.
• Ensure adherence to correct work procedures.
• Work as a productive team member to meet daily supervisor-set goals.
• Help build the team environment and communicate effectively.
