Job summary

The City of New York DSNY is seeking a Community Coordinator to drive outreach and education across diverse communities and to support sanitation programs.

Job description

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.

The Bureau of Public Affairs is responsible for communicating DSNY’s policies, procedures, and services to all internal and external audiences.

Duties
  • Performing direct in-person and remote outreach and education to DSNY's diverse constituencies, including residents, building staff, property managers, elected officials, government agencies, community-based organizations, trade associations, and advocacy groups.
  • Representing DSNY at public outreach events regularly, including community board and town hall meetings, and Agency walk-throughs on various topics related to Sanitation operations and programs, often during evenings and weekends.
  • Tracking outreach activity outcome metrics, program outcomes, and public feedback.
  • Responding to constituent inquiries and complaints via phone and email in a timely manner, ensuring accurate resolution.
  • Supporting other Bureau functions and priorities as needed.

COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058

Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with community engagement, public outreach, and education. - Strong communications skills ability to tailor complex messages to diverse audiences. - Ability to show professionalism in public forums while representing the Agency. - Knowledge and interest in Department of Sanitation waste and recycling programs and sustainability initiatives. - Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal, writing, and data management skills. - Knowledge of New York City, its agencies, and operations. - Proficiency in use of word processing and data management applications including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. - In addition to English, fluency in a foreign language including, but not limited to: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, and Hebrew. - Possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
