Job summary

Hearts for the Homeless invites applications for an Outreach Assistant in Buffalo, NY. This part-time, day-shift role supports the Clothing Closet, volunteer coordination, client services, and donations, helping the Outreach Ministry serve neighbors in need.

The Outreach Assistant will work approximately 25–30 hours per week, with Saturday availability required, and will assist with outreach activities, client services, donations, and events.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in customer service, nonprofit work, or volunteering helpful but not required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning as part of a team.
  • Dependable, professional, and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office/Google Workspace).
  • Valid driver’s license preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily operations of Outreach programs and services.
  • Coordinate and support volunteers, including providing direction and coverage.
  • Operate Clothing Closet during public hours.
  • Provide welcoming, respectful customer service to clients, guests, volunteers, donors, and community members.
  • Assist clients with accessing available resources and services.
  • Receive, organize, sort, and distribute donations and supplies.
  • Maintain an organized, clean Outreach environment.
  • Help set up and prepare areas for Outreach activities and events.
  • Monitor inventory and communicate supply needs to the Outreach Program Manager.
  • Complete required forms, records, statistics, and other documentation accurately.
  • Assist with special events, community activities, and Outreach initiatives.
  • Follow all safety, sanitation, and service standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality and treat all individuals with dignity and respect.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Job Type: Part-Time, approximately 25-30 hours per week
  • Pay: $16.00-$18.00 per hour
  • Work Location: On-site / Non-Remote
About Hearts for the Homeless

Hearts for the Homeless is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and organized Outreach Assistant to support our Outreach Ministry and help provide services to individuals and families in our community.

This position will assist with the day-to-day operations of our Outreach programs, including the Clothing Closet, volunteer coordination, client services, donations, organization of supplies, and other Outreach activities.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with people, is comfortable serving individuals from diverse backgrounds, and can balance customer service with hands-on operational responsibilities.

Schedule

This is a part-time, day-shift position of approximately 25-30 hours per week. Saturday availability is required.

The Outreach Assistant will serve as the primary staff member supporting the Clothing Closet, which is open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. On other scheduled weekdays, the Outreach Assistant will assist with additional Outreach activities, client services, volunteer support, donations, special events, and other program needs.

  • Follow all organizational safety, sanitation, and service standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality and treat all individuals with dignity and respect.

Qualifications

Physical Requirements

This is an active, hands-on position. The Outreach Assistant may be required to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, carry, push, and pull as part of daily operations. The position may involve lifting items weighing up to approximately 35 pounds at waist height and working both indoors and outdoors as needed.
