Job summary

UNC Health is seeking an outpatient Pharmacy Technician II to support the pharmacist in dispensing medications, processing prescriptions, inventory management, and customer service in a fast-paced setting.

The role requires NC Board of Pharmacy registration (or enrollment in a PharmD program) and may include immunization certification and training responsibilities. Position is full-time, onsite in Chapel Hill with a 40-hour work week.

Qualifications

• Pharmacy technician certification and NC Board of Pharmacy registration required unless enrolled in PharmD program.
• CPhT or ExCPT certification required unless enrolled in PharmD program.
• Prior pharmacy technician experience and immunization certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

Summary: The Certified Technician provides general support to the pharmacist by receiving, reviewing, preparing, and dispensing medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

At Employee Pharmacy, the OP Pharmacy Technician II supports an outpatient pharmacy serving UNC Health teammates, eligible dependents, medical staff, and other customers purchasing over-the-counter products. Responsibilities include prescription processing, medication preparation, inventory management, point-of-sale activities, immunization support, customer service, and regulatory compliance within the scope of pharmacy technician practice.

The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, detail-oriented, and committed to supporting workflow efficiency, patient experience, safe dispensing processes, and accurate prescription fulfillment in a fast-paced outpatient pharmacy environment.

This position reports to pharmacy leadership and works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy technician certification and registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy are required unless otherwise permitted by applicable job requirements.

This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.

• 1. Receives and accurately transcribes orders from prescribers under the supervision of a pharmacist. Process prescriptions in a timely order and manner so as to best take care of patient needs.


• 2. Assists with training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions.


• 3. Assists with Medication Therapy Management, Medsync, and other clinical outreach programs.


• 4. Selects and prepares medications (oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) as authorized by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.


• 5. Prepares medications for pick-up, delivery or shipping. Returns unpurchased medications to stock and processes credits.


• 6. Solves issues with patient payment (prior authorization, patient assistance needed, etc.). Sells prescriptions to patients and processes payment. Accurately manages cash and other payments.


• 7. Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy services that do not require a pharmacist’s professional judgment or expertise.


• 8. Operates and supports automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications for individual patients, according to pharmacist and physician orders.


• 9. Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory and supplies, and contributes to expiration date management.


• 10. Contributes to process improvement projects.

Other Information

Education Requirements:

None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

Registration as a technician with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program. If currently enrolled, an NCBOP Pharmacy Intern registration may be accepted.

CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program; if enrolled, this can be waived for the duration of the PharmD program.

Professional Experience Requirements:

Prior pharmacy technician experience and immunization certification is preferred.
