Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Pharmacy Technician II to provide general support to pharmacists at Campus Health and Student Stores Pharmacy. The role includes prescription processing, medication preparation, inventory management, and patient access support on the UNC Chapel Hill campus.

The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, and detail-oriented, committed to safe dispensing and workflow efficiency. Licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy and a certified technician credential are required

Qualifications

  • Certification and registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy required.
  • Pharmacy technician certification preferred (CPhT or ExCPT).
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and transcribes prescriptions under pharmacist supervision.
  • Assist with medication preparation, inventory and patient access support.
  • Support Medication Therapy Management and clinical outreach programs.
  • Operate automated dispensing systems and ensure accurate dispensing.

Summary

The Certified technician provides general support to the pharmacist by receiving, reviewing, compounding and dispensing medications. At Campus Health Pharmacy and Student Stores Pharmacy, the OP Pharmacy Tech II PD helps meet the needs of the UNC Chapel Hill campus community through prescription processing, medication preparation, inventory management, medication access support, point-of-sale activities, customer service, and regulatory compliance within the scope of pharmacy technician practice. The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, detail-oriented, and committed to supporting workflow efficiency, patient experience, safe dispensing processes, and pharmacy team development. This position reports to pharmacy leadership and works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy technician certification and registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy are required unless otherwise permitted by applicable job requirements. This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.

Responsibilities
  1. Receives and accurately transcribes orders from prescribers under the supervision of a pharmacist. Process prescriptions in a timely order and manner so as to best take care of patient needs.
  2. Assists with training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions.
  3. Assists with Medication Therapy Management, Medsync, and other clinical outreach programs.
  4. Selects and prepares medications (oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) as authorized by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
  5. Prepares medications for pick-up, delivery or shipping. Returns unpurchased medications to stock and processes credits.
  6. Solves issues with patient payment (prior authorization, patient assistance needed, etc.). Sells prescriptions to patients and processes payment. Accurately manages cash and other payments.
  7. Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy services that do not require a pharmacist's professional judgment or expertise.
  8. Operates and supports automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications for individual patients, according to pharmacist and physician orders.
  9. Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory and supplies, and contributes to expiration date management.
  10. Contributes to process improvement projects.
Other Information

Education Requirements:

  • None required as long as other position qualifications are met.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • Registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program.
  • CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Prior pharmacy technician experience is preferred.
