Job summary

University of Michigan's Michigan Medicine seeks an Observation Outpatient Coder to translate clinical documentation into ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS codes with accuracy. You will collaborate with providers and billing teams to ensure compliant coding and optimal reimbursement while safeguarding patient information.

The ideal candidate has 1–2 years in hospital coding, relevant certifications, and strong knowledge of medical terminology.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1–2 years of coding experience in a hospital setting.
• Certification as CPC, CCS, COC, RHIT, or equivalent.
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.

Responsibilities

• Accurately code procedures and diagnoses using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
• Review and interpret clinical documentation to ensure appropriate code selection.
• Collaborate with medical coder compliance specialists, providers and medical staff for clarification and to ensure completeness of coding information.
• Identify, investigate, and independently resolve most coding discrepancies, denials, and potential quality or billing issues within established guidelines.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, regulations, and industry best practices.
• Assist in auditing and reviewing patient records for accuracy and compliance.
• Handle confidential patient information with the utmost discretion and integrity.
• Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with the evolving coding standards and medical practices.
