Job summary

Yale New Haven Health is seeking an Outpatient Coder I to review medical records and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and ICD-10-PCS codes in a high-volume outpatient setting. This role supports coding accuracy and productivity within a comprehensive coding service line.

You will engage in ongoing education, resolve edits, and query clinicians as needed to ensure compliant coding and revenue integrity. Experience with Epic and the 3M encoder is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred with coursework in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathophysiology, and disease processes.
• Minimum of 2 years of outpatient or professional coding experience in a complex service line.
• CCS/CCS-P or RHIT/RHIA credential preferred; coding credential through AAPC and/or AHIMA required.
• Experience with Epic and 3M encoder preferred.
• CPC-A or CCA not accepted.

Responsibilities

• Review medical record documentation to determine appropriate ICD-10-CM codes in accordance with official coding guidelines.
• Review documentation to accurately select CPT codes, modifiers, and ICD-10-PCS as applicable and resolve CCI edits.
• Maintain a minimum 95% overall coding quality score in diagnostic, procedural, and modifier code selection.
• Maintain productivity expectations defined by the department for the coding service line.
• Code at least one complex outpatient service line (e.g., Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, Observation, Oncology, or Same Day Surgery).
• Participate in ongoing education, journals, and coding education sessions to ensure correct code selection.
