Job summary

Mississippi Department of Employment Security is seeking a skilled Outfitter to install parts and hardware on fiberglass and aluminum boats. You will use hand and power tools to fit seats, windshields and trim, and will mark positions from specifications.

Responsibilities include cutting, drilling, caulking and verifying workmanship, plus assisting with engines and hydraulics. A high school diploma and mechanical aptitude are required, with safety awareness and good communication essential.

Job Description

Installs parts, marine hardware, metal trim, seats and windshields on fiberglass and aluminum boats using hand and power tools. Locates and marks position of hardware, seats and other parts according to specifications using a ruler, template or other marking devices. Assists other workers with installing engines, hydraulics and parts related to the marine industry.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Installs parts, like hatches, marine hardware, metal trim, seats, cabinets, and windshields on fiberglass or aluminum, using hand tools portable power tools.
  • Locates marks position of hardware, seats and other parts according to specifications, using rule, template and marking device.
  • Cuts or grinds mounting bases or brackets, using portable electric saws grinders and bolts or screws them in place.
  • Drills holes bolts hardware, hatches, and other parts in place, using hand tools.
  • Applies caulking compound under spray rails, windshields, and around windows, using caulking gun.
  • Saws aluminum trim to specified lengths cements, crimps, screws, or pounds trim into place, using hacksaw, crimping device, adhesives, screwdriver, and mallet.
  • Inspects completed boat for defects and writes report of appraisal.
  • May grind interior and exterior contours of hull to remove burrs rough edges, using portable grinder.
  • Installs outboard and inboard motors and marine gears, waterjets, stern drives, and other similar propulsion systems.
  • May measure, cut and install insulation in designated sections of boats, using hand tools.
Skills & Experience
  • 2+ years of experience in the marine industry, mechanical field or manufacturing industry preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be mechanically inclined and have the ability to read and take measurements
  • Must be able to operate hand tools and power tools
  • Must be familiar with shop tools and heavy equipment
  • Familiar with blueprints, drawings and schematics
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Must have good communication skills
  • Must be safety conscious
