Job summary

City of Akron is seeking a routine manual laborer for the Public Works waste collection team. You will load recyclables and trash, assist in dumping, and help with truck maintenance in all weather. Work is outdoors and supervised with routine procedures.

Mandatory: valid Ohio driver’s license; capable of heavy labor; able to follow instructions. Selection includes a competitive exam and performance test, with residency/veteran preferences applicable.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid State of Ohio operator's license.
• Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.
• Ability to operate motorized vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Collects and loads household recyclables, trash and garbage by placing contents of garbage cans into a packer truck.
• Operates truck sweep blade, assists in dumping, and provides ground support to drivers.
• Cleans trucks, collects waste at City facilities and events, and adheres to safety practices.
• May operate a pickup truck and maintain city trash carts; handles curbside pickups and special clearances.
