Job summary

The City of Hickory is seeking a general laborer to perform a variety of outdoor and manual tasks. The role supports street maintenance, drainage, and stormwater projects across city facilities.

Responsibilities include operating basic equipment, assisting with concrete work, and ensuring safe work practices in variable weather. After-hours work may be required during emergencies or seasonal needs.

Qualifications

• Must read, write and perform basic math to high-school level.
• Valid NC driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
• Knowledge of City safety policies and procedures.
• Experience using common work tools.
• Ability to follow instructions reliably.

Responsibilities

• Cut limbs and brush; operate a chainsaw.
• Help with street maintenance tasks.
• Clean ditches and drainage pipes.
• Form and finish concrete.
• Assist stormwater construction.
• Pick up litter along streets.
• Direct traffic at worksites.
• Load/unload equipment; set up work sites.
• Operate jackhammer and other equipment as needed.
• Sow grass and spread straw.
• Operate snowplow when required.
• Operate mower, weed eater, hedge trimmer.
• Set up/clean up for events.
• After-hours work during emergencies.
