Job summary

City of Hickory is seeking a skilled heavy equipment operator to perform manual labor on department projects. The role requires operating track loaders, graders, backhoes, and other equipment, with a CDL Class A preferred.

You may assist other departments and participate in on-call rotations during inclement weather. Applicants should have high school-level reading, writing, and math abilities and 1–2 years of related experience.

Qualifications

• Reading and basic math skills are required.
• One to two years of related experience preferred.
• CDL Class A license is preferred.
• Knowledge of city street construction and maintenance procedures.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment such as graders, loaders, and backhoes.
• Ability to operate hand and power tools; good communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment and large vehicles with specialized functions.
• Hauls, transports, loads, and unloads equipment and materials.
• Performs street maintenance, repair, and construction tasks.
• Performs general and preventive maintenance to vehicles and equipment.
• Operates snowplows and salt/brine trucks.
• Directs traffic in work zones and assists other departments.
