Outdoor Educators at the Whitewater Center are responsible for implementing a variety of educational programs for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Most programs are scheduled for the spring and the fall, so Educators are free and encouraged to explore employment in other departments during the summer months. Educators work a variable, part-time schedule, and report to the Outdoor School Supervisor.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe, educational, and enjoyable atmosphere during environmental education and team building programs
- Learn and facilitate lesson plans pertaining to environmental education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) topics
- Manage groups of up to 30 students at a time, and ensure quality supervision during programs – effective communication with chaperones is essential
- Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered by the Whitewater center
- Maintain availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Prior experience teaching in a formal or informal setting for students from kindergarten through 12th grade
- Background in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Biology, or another related field
- Strong communicator who is highly motivated and energetic with an outgoing personality
- Possession of a North Carolina Environmental Education Certification or current work towards certification is beneficial
- Weekday availability is required. This position is part-time, Monday through Friday in the following months: March through June & August through November
Physical Demands
- Must be able to safely self-transport over uneven terrain or in a confined space
- Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time in all weather conditions
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, team environment
- Must be able to lift and move at least 50 pounds
- Must be able to bend, stand, lean, and kneel on a regular basis

Overview Of Department
The Outdoor Activities Department is responsible for leading and supporting experiences in a variety of water and land-based sports. The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Center’s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.
