Job summary

MaineGuide is seeking an experienced Outboard Technician to diagnose, service, and repair outboard motors for our members and customers. You will handle everything from routine maintenance to major powerhead and lower unit repairs, contributing to our reputation for quality work.

You’ll perform seasonal commissioning, winterization, and boat handling, with a focus on safety and accurate record-keeping. Certification in Mercury or Yamaha is preferred, and coastal outdoor work is common throughout

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience servicing outboard motors or related background.
  • Mercury or Yamaha certification required; both preferred.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and use diagnostic tools.
  • Own hand tools; we supply specialty/shop equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to operate a boat and forklift a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and service outboard motors, including fuel, electrical, cooling, and ignition systems.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance: oil changes, impellers, spark plugs, fuel filters, and tune-ups.
  • Complete seasonal commissioning and winterization for the fleet.
  • Rebuild and repair powerheads, lower units, and gearcases as needed.
  • Install and rig new outboard motors, including controls and gauges.
  • Sea trial motors to confirm repairs before return to the customer.
  • Keep clear, accurate service records and communicate job status to the service manager.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and dock work area.
  • Ability to seamlessly transition to other yard service-related tasks as needed.

Job description

Position Summary

The Outboard Technician diagnoses, services, and repairs outboard motors for our members and customers, working across the full range of jobs from routine maintenance and winterization to major powerhead and lower unit repairs. This role is central to our service department and our reputation for quality work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, repair, and service outboard motors, including fuel, electrical, cooling, and ignition systems
  • Perform scheduled maintenance: oil changes, impellers, spark plugs, fuel filters, and tune-ups
  • Complete seasonal commissioning and winterization for the fleet
  • Rebuild and repair powerheads, lower units, and gearcases as needed
  • Install and rig new outboard motors, including controls and gauges
  • Sea trial motors to confirm repairs before return to the customer
  • Keep clear, accurate service records and communicate job status to the service manager

Qualifications

  • Mercury or Yamaha certification required; both preferred
  • Working knowledge of two‑stroke and four‑stroke outboard systems
  • Experience servicing outboards from 90 HP up to 450 HP preferred
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and use diagnostic tools
  • Own hand tools; we supply specialty and shop equipment
  • Valid driver's license; ability to operate a boat and forklift a plus
  • Comfortable working outdoors and on the water in a seasonal marine environment
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail

  • $27–$35/hour, based on experience and certification

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 50 lbs. continuously throughout the day, work in confined engine spaces, stand for extended periods, work on elevated surfaces and ladders, and work on docks, on boats, and outdoors in varying weather.
