Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs seeks an Orthopedic Health Technician (OHT) to join the Orthopedic Outpatient Clinics under the Orthopedic Division of the Department of Surgery at the Sacramento VAMC.

The journeyman technician provides direct patient care for casts, braces, splints, and traction in outpatient, ED, OR, and inpatient settings. Qualified applicants must have GS-7 level experience (time-in-grade) with demonstration of specialized tasks such as applying casts, intra-articular

Qualifications

• Time-In-Grade requirements apply to current Federal employees
• Specialized experience includes assisting physician in casts and minor orthopedic procedures like injections and hardware removal
• Reviewing clinic schedule with imaging available for appointment
• Daily rounds on inpatient units; maintain/inspect orthopedic equipment; safety feedback to staff

Responsibilities

• Provide staffing support for Podiatry clinic as workload permits
• Operate and maintain equipment used in casts/braces applications and removals
• Demonstrate OSHA safety standards and universal precautions
• Sterilize instruments to prevent infection
• Maintain/clean reusable medical equipment per manufacturer instructions
• Develop casts, braces with knowledge of materials and tools for procedures
• Recognize obvious abnormalities during procedures and report findings
• Know proper body mechanics for safety
• Work with CPRS EMR and Vista systems
• Schedule: Full-time, Mon-Fri 8:00-4:30; Telework not available; On-site only
