Job summary

SMOC in Virginia is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant to support physicians and clinical staff in our orthopedic practice. You will prepare patients for examinations, assist during procedures, and manage administrative tasks to maintain smooth clinic operations.

The role involves obtaining prior authorizations with insurance providers, accurate patient communication, and ensuring HIPAA and OSHA compliance while delivering compassionate patient care in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a medical office or clinical setting preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
• Ability to remain professional in confidential or high-pressure situations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Bonus: EMR experience (AthenaHealth preferred).
• Certification not required for this position.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients and prepare them for examination by taking injury histories and reviewing prior clinical notes.
• Communicate x-ray needs per physician guidance
• Perform key clinical skills such as casting, splinting, assisting with injections, suture/staple removal, post-op dressing changes, and ultrasound use
• Accurately convey physician verbal and written orders
• Operate office and clinical software/equipment as needed
• Facilitate lab specimens and place electronic orders as directed by the physician
• Ensure patients fully understand their follow-up instructions before leaving
• Maintain clean and organized exam rooms and workspaces
• Handle incoming calls, voicemails, emails, and patient correspondence
• Apply practice insurance policies appropriately in patient care situations
• Maintain physician dictations and ensure accurate patient records
• Adhere to OSHA and HIPAA guidelines
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned such as Forms and scheduling, etc.
