Job summary

Boston Children's Hospital seeks a Dental Assistant to support Dentists and Surgeons during Plastic & Oral Surgery exams and procedures. This role prepares patients and instruments, records vital signs, captures radiographs, and assists during procedures with passing instruments and materials.

Post-procedure, the assistant provides written care instructions and ensures rooms and equipment are sterilized. The position supports patient flow, rooms readiness, and follow-up scheduling, emphasizing

Qualifications

  • Up to one year of basic technical education or at least one year of on-the-job training.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Basic CPR Certification.
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB).

Responsibilities

  • Greets and directs patients, provides routine information on procedures, and escorts patients to and from the service area.
  • Prepares room and instruments for scheduled procedures and ensures materials are ready for use.
  • Takes and files diagnostic radiographs and patient photos, and produces study models.
  • Provides technical assistance during oral surgery procedures under local anesthesia and nitrous oxide/IV sedation.
  • Provides post-operative instructions to patients/parents and maintains sterile environment.

Job description

Position Summary

Provides technical assistance and support for Dentists/Surgeons during Plastic & Oral Surgery examinations and procedures. Under regular supervision and following established procedures and instructions, provides basic direct care to patients. Prepares patients and instruments and treatment materials for procedures. Obtains, measures, and records vital signs. Obtains radiographic images and dental impressions. Assists clinician during examinations including passing instruments and materials, placing topical gel and/or anesthetic cream; may remove sutures. After procedure, provides patients/parents with general information and instruction. Cleans and sterilizes room and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Greets and directs patients, provides routine information on procedures, and escorts patients to and from the service area. Assists patients in scheduling required follow-up appointments.
  • Prepares room and instruments for the scheduled procedure. Ensures instruments and materials are in place and prepared for use.
  • Takes, checks, and properly saves and files diagnostic radiographs and patient photos. Takes dental impressions and produces study models. Pours and trims hand and foot models.
  • Provides technical assistance during oral and plastic surgery procedures under local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and/or IV sedation. Assists surgeon as instructed by displaying radiographic images and passing instruments and materials. Monitors and records patient vital signs such as temperature, pulse, and blood pressure.
  • Provides patients/parents with written instructions for post-operative care and proper follow-up.
  • Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains surgical instruments and equipment. Ensures operatory and exam rooms are cleaned and instruments are sterilized prior to patient examinations/procedures.
Minimum Qualifications

Work experience required: up to one year of basic technical education or at least one year of on the job training.

Education

High School diploma/GED is required.

Certification/Registration Required
  • Basic CPR Certification.
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB)

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
