Job summary

UCSF Health and the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital seek a patient-centered Optometrist to provide comprehensive eye care in a high-volume academic safety-net setting, collaborating with ophthalmologists, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals.

This position focuses on evidence-based primary and specialty eye care, including pre- and post-operative co-management, urgent eye care, patient education, and participation in quality

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry degree required.
  • Proficient in comprehensive eye examinations and related testing.
  • Knowledge of ocular disease management and refractive care.
  • Ability to perform subjective refraction for ophthalmology patients.
  • Experience with pediatric well-eye exams.
  • California driver’s license with clean record.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and safety policies.

Job Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) seeks a patient-centered Optometrist to provide comprehensive eye care at the ZSFG Ophthalmology Clinic, a high-volume academic safety-net setting. The Optometrist will deliver evidence-based primary and specialty optometric services to a diverse, underserved population, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of ophthalmologists, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals.

Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity, pupillary reflex, confrontation visual fields, tonometry, slit lamp, and fundus assessment.
  • Diagnose and manage ocular disease and prescribe appropriate corrective lenses.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative co‑management for ophthalmic surgeries.
  • Deliver urgent eye care for acute conditions.
  • Educate patients about eye health, self‑care, and treatment adherence.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical research as appropriate.
  • Teach and mentor residents, fellows, and medical students.
Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Optometry degree.
  • Proficient in moderately complex optometric examinations including visual acuity, pupillary examination, confrontation visual fields, tonometry, evaluation of muscle balance, stereopsis, phorias, vergences, retinoscopy, slit lamp examination, lensometry, indirect ophthalmoscopy, fundus photography and other relevant components.
  • Detailed knowledge of common workflows in an eye care clinical practice.
  • Ability to perform subjective refraction for ophthalmology patients.
  • Experience performing well‑eye exams for pediatric patients.
  • Proficient in basic and complex contact lens fittings, including medically necessary lenses.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with clear documentation and reporting.
  • Familiarity with infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practice policies; compliance with HIPAA and preparation for regulatory reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing medically complex patients.
  • Fluency in spoken Spanish or Chinese.
  • At least two years of experience as a practicing optometrist in a hospital‑based, public health, or safety‑net setting.
Licensure / Certification
  • License to practice Optometry in California with TPA certification.
  • Glaucoma certification from the California Board of Optometry.
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Preferred: American Heart Association CPR/BLS certification.
  • Preferred: DEA license.
