Job description

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Optometry Manager and the Chief of Ophthalmology, the Optometrist will deliver evidence‑based primary and specialty optometric services to a diverse, underserved population in a high‑volume academic safety‑net setting. The role supports UCSF’s missions of clinical excellence, education, and research, including teaching of trainees and participation in academic initiatives as appropriate.

Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity, pupillary examination, confrontation visual fields, tonometry, evaluation of muscle balance, stereopsis, phorias, vergences, retinoscopy, slit‑lamp examination, and indirect ophthalmoscopy.
  • Diagnose and manage ocular disease, including acute and chronic conditions.
  • Provide subjective refraction for ophthalmology patients.
  • Conduct well‑eye examinations for pediatric patients.
  • Perform basic and complex contact lens fittings, including medically necessary contact lenses.
  • Co‑manage pre‑ and post‑operative care for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
  • Offer urgent eye care as needed.
  • Engage in teaching, mentorship, quality improvement, and clinical research activities.
  • Promote evidence‑based medicine, health equity, cultural responsiveness, and patient education.
Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Optometry degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform moderately complex optometric examinations and subject‑ive refraction for ophthalmology patients.
  • Ability to perform well‑eye exams for pediatric patients.
  • Experience with basic and complex contact lens fittings, including medically necessary contact lenses.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to establish professional relationships with co‑workers and departmental personnel.
  • Knowledge of infection‑control, safety, administrative, and clinical practice policies and procedures; compliance with HIPAA and regulatory review requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing medically complex patients.
  • Fluency in spoken Spanish or Chinese.
  • At least two years of experience as a practicing optometrist in a hospital‑based, public health, or safety‑net setting.
Licensure and Certification

Required: License to practice Optometry in California with TPA certification, Glaucoma certification from California Board of Optometry, and Valid California Driver’s License.

Preferred: American Heart Association CPR/BLS and DEA license.
