Job summary

Henry Ford OptimEyes seeks an optometric assistant to support physicians during comprehensive visual and medical exams. You will perform preliminary testing, document medical history and lens prescriptions, and guide patients through contact lens care and eyewear options.

The role requires empathy, strong communication, and the ability to work in a retail optical environment with evening and weekend hours.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Computer experience and basic math skills preferred.
• Customer service or optometric tech experience preferred.
• EMR knowledge preferred.
• Retail/customer service experience preferred.
• Must complete required HF Optimeyes training.
• Meet customer service standards per HFHS policy.
• Ongoing customer service training and in-services.

Responsibilities

• Assist doctor with comprehensive exams and procedures.
• Perform preliminary testing (auto refraction, IOP, vision testing).
• Document patient data in EMR.
• Escort patients and route to appropriate departments.
• Explain contact lens handling and eyewear solutions.
• Adhere to scheduling guidelines for appointments.
• Interpret prescriptions and suggest products/adjustments.
• Complete training programs and required education.
• Address customer questions and direct where needed.
