Job summary

Henry Ford Health is seeking an Optometric Assistant to support doctors during comprehensive eye exams and minor procedures. You will perform preliminary testing, document findings in the EMR, and guide patients through the exam flow with care.

The role requires walking, standing, and working in a retail optical environment, with evening and weekend hours. Prior optometry or customer service experience is preferred, along with basic math and computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary testing: auto refractometry, IOP, visual acuity, and dilation as needed.
  • Document patient information and testing results in the EMR.
  • Educate patients on contact lens care and eyewear prescriptions.
  • Direct patients to appropriate departments and handle questions with courtesy.
  • Adhere to scheduling guidelines and manage multiple patients efficiently.

Job description

General Summary

Responsible for assisting the doctor with providing thorough comprehensive visual exams, medical exams, office visits, in-office minor medical procedures, and contact lens follow-ups by performing preliminary testing, electronic medical record entries, contact lens classes, support duties, and post exam follow-up.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform visual preliminary testing, including auto refraction, intraocular pressure, neutralizing prescription eyewear, blood pressure, visual acuity, motility testing, pupil assessment, confrontation fields, anterior chamber angle assessment, and dilation.
  • Document preliminary testing entries and patient information—chief complaint, medical history, medications, social history, and previous/current contact lens and eyewear prescriptions—in the electronic medical record.
  • Escort patients throughout the exam process and transfer authority to the appropriate department—eyewear consultant, dispenser, or customer service representative—and educate patients on contact lens handling, wearing schedule, care, and the importance of owning prescription glasses.
  • Accurately perform, follow, and adhere to scheduling guidelines and allotted time for each appointment.
  • Interpret a doctor’s prescription and suggest products and enhancements to meet specific prescription requirements.
  • Complete the department training program and all necessary educational requirements to perform job responsibilities.
  • Answer and address customer concerns and questions.
  • Direct customers to the appropriate source when unable to address questions.
  • Handle multiple customers effectively with tact and a sense of urgency.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Previous computer experience and basic math skills preferred.
  • Previous customer service or optometric tech experience preferred.
  • Computer and/or electronic medical records knowledge preferred.
  • Retail and/or hospitality and/or customer service experience preferred.
  • Must be able to walk, bend and stand for extended periods of time; completion of all required training courses as directed by Henry Ford Optimeyes.
  • Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities, standards, and behaviors as outlined in the HFHS Customer Service Policy.
  • Must practice the customer skills as provided through ongoing training and in-services.
