Job summary

MCPHS School of Optometry is seeking a part-time registered optician to train students in the optical shop, 10 Optical. This role requires 27 hours per week onsite and involves patient education, order processing, and billing duties.

The ideal candidate has a MA Dispensing Optician License, at least 3 years of optical management experience with supervisory duties, and familiarity with third-party payers and EHR systems. Flexibility to cover additional hours as needed is expected.

Qualifications

• Current Massachusetts Dispensing Optician License.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Optical management with supervisory experience.
• Experience with third-party payers and vision care plans (e.g., VSP, Eyemed, Spectera, MassHealth).
• Experience with electronic health records, inventory management systems, and ordering platforms.

Job description

The School of Optometry is looking for a part-time registered optician to provide high-quality training and education for students in the School of Optometry’s optical shop, 10 Optical. This is a part-time position scheduled to work 27 hours per week, with onsite requirements.

• Provides appropriate patient education regarding lens and frame options
• Ensures the timely processing of daily patient orders
• Completes verification of insurance or vision care coverage for optical products and services
• Oversees the collection of patient payments, the submission of accurate billing information, and the posting of charges and payments in the system
• Assists with activities of student interns when needed
• Assists with instruction of laboratory functions including, use of edging equipment
• Keeps current details on vision care plans and other third-party payers
• Helps with inventory management and control
• Use of edging equipment

Required:

• Current Massachusetts Dispensing Optician License
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Optical management required. Supervisory experience
• Prior experience with third-party payers and vision care plans (VSP, Eyemed, Spectera, MassHealth).
• Experience with electronic health records, inventory management systems, and ordering platforms.
• Excellent customer service abilities.
• Teaching and/or training experience is preferred.
• Able to sustain a flexible work schedule – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (standard hours). May be asked to cover 10 Optical when manager is on vacation or away from campus.

Physical Requirements:

• Typical office or administrative working conditions. Staff is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Work is primarily sedentary in nature; there are no special physical demands.
