Job summary

Valkyrie Enterprises in Huntsville, AL seeks an Optical System Engineer & Lens Designer to design lens systems for weapon sensors, perform opto-mechanical integration, and support tests at Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal. This on-site role requires collaboration across engineering teams and hands-on lab work.

The ideal candidate holds a BS/MS in Optical Engineering or Physics with 5–10+ years of experience, deep Zemax proficiency, and DoD program familiarity.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
• 5–10+ years in optical design and engineering.
• Proven ability to design, tolerancing, and analyze optical systems.
• Extensive Zemax OpticStudio experience.
• Experience with opto-mechanical packaging and CAD tools.
• Experience with visible and infrared wavelengths; coatings.
• Programming skills in Matlab or Python for data analysis.

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced optical engineering, lens design, opto-mechanical integration, testing, and analysis.
• Serve as an optical SME and coordinate with other engineers.
• End-to-end design of refractive and reflective optical systems using Zemax, across VIS and IR.
• Model and analyze components with opto-mechanical CAD software.
• Develop laser and optical solutions for testing seekers.
• Support assembly, alignment, and testing of systems.
• Coordinate HWIL equipment operation and radiometric calibration.
• Mentor junior optical engineers.
• Prepare program status reports and technical reviews.
• Identify and mitigate optical program risks.
