The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

The selected candidate will support optical engineering for the Transportation & Electronics Business Group Laboratory. You will work closely with the Systems and Modeling Group, business verticals, and product platform partners. The ideal candidate will excel in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment, managing multiple projects effectively while collaborating across divisions, manufacturing, and research labs. Responsibilities include designing and developing optical systems and components, such as optical gratings and micro/nanostructures, for applications like optical displays and automotive sectors.

As an Optical Engineer, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Design and develop optical systems and components, including optical gratings and nanostructures, for applications such as optical displays and automotive.
  • Perform detailed optical simulations and modeling using internal and commercial software to predict performance and optimize designs.
  • Apply principles of physical optics and electromagnetic theory to solve complex problems and advance R&D for future business opportunities.
  • Conduct validation and testing of optical designs, analyze results, and iterate to commercialize products swiftly.
  • Stay current with advancements in optical technologies and incorporate relevant innovations.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including specifications, test plans, and reports for stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with experts in the Systems and Modeling Group and product platforms to develop new products aligned with customer timelines.
Your Skills and Expertise

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field (verified prior to start).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong expertise in physical optics, electromagnetic theory, and imaging optics.
  • Proficiency in optical simulation software (e.g., Zemax, LightTools, Lumerical).
  • Experience with scientific computing languages (Python, MATLAB, Julia).
  • Knowledge of numerical algorithms like FDTD, RCWA/FMM, FEM.
  • Experience with optical characterization and testing techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Experience leading projects.
Work Location & Travel

Lab-based in Maplewood, MN, with on-site work expected. Travel up to 5% domestically and internationally. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Additional Information

Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. Compensation range: $122,292 - $149,468, plus benefits. For more details, visit 3M Benefits.
